Lessons from Scaling Back: Freedom, Focus, and Fresh Starts

by Kaycee McCoy, Owner of Create/Captivate & Pawsnickety Pets

There’s this narrative in entrepreneurship that growth is always the goal. Bigger team. Bigger office. Bigger client roster. Bigger revenue. But sometimes, the boldest move you can make isn’t scaling up…it’s scaling back.

If you’ve been around here a while, you’ve seen Create/Captivate evolve. What used to be a boutique creative studio with a small (but mighty) team is now a solo operation.

And y’all…I am thriving.

Let’s talk about why that shift happened, what it’s taught me, and why I’m not only okay with doing less… I’m absolutely loving it!

I Built the Business I Thought I Was Supposed To

When I started scaling, I did it with purpose. I wanted to be a GREAT employer. I’ve worked under toxic leadership more times than not before, and I was determined to create a space where people felt appreciated, empowered, and paid fairly. And honestly? I did that.

I had a team of incredible humans. For a while, everything was working. We had systems, momentum, and amazing clients. But behind the scenes… I was juggling a lot.

I was running two businesses: Create/Captivate and Pawsnickety Pets. My husband was unexpectedly deployed. I was managing our household solo (with a dog, two cats, and a million to-do lists). It was chaos on all fronts.

The Turning Point

Even with the hustle, my inbox was filling up with overdue client invoices. We’re talking nearly tens of thousands of dollars several months past due. I was managing not only my workload, but also the team’s workload. Add in burnout, and you’ve got a recipe for a major business identity crisis.

And here’s the thing no one talks about when they glamorize agency life: scaling comes with a different kind of chaos. More clients = more problems to solve. More team members = more people to manage. More revenue = more expenses.

It’s not “freedom.” It’s just a new kind of busy.

So I Scaled Back—Way Back

When I made the decision to scale down, I thought I was closing the doors on C/C. I kept a couple of long-term clients and figured I’d see it through and call it done after that.

But then something unexpected happened… I remembered why I started this business in the first place.

I wasn’t chasing big. I was chasing impact. I was chasing freedom, creativity, and the joy of helping businesses thrive on their own terms.

Almost a year later, I have a handful of lovely clients who respect my boundaries, communicate clearly, and trust my expertise. And for the first time in a long time, I feel energized by the work rather than weighed down by it.

What I’ve Gained by Scaling Back

✨ Freedom
No more juggling 8 team members’ calendars. I control my time now.

✨ Focus
I’ve narrowed my services to what I love and do best…consulting, custom AI Assistant builds, and to one product: Social Media Strategy Workbook. No more trying to be everything to everyone.

✨ Fresh Starts
This isn’t me going back to square one. It’s me stepping into the next version of Create/Captivate with more intention, more alignment, and more me.

What I Want Other Creatives to Know

→ You don’t have to scale to be successful.
Your version of success might look like a packed calendar or it might look like a slow morning with coffee and creative work. Both are valid.

→ It’s okay to pivot.
Businesses evolve. You evolve. Your offers, pricing, and goals should change over time.

→ Burnout isn’t failure.
It’s feedback. When the work stops feeling good, that’s your sign to reassess. And trust me: there’s no shame in choosing peace over pressure.

So… What Is Create/Captivate Now?

These days, it’s just me—Kaycee. Still designing. Still strategizing. Still wildly obsessed with helping small businesses communicate better.

Here’s what I offer now:

  • Marketing Consulting for small biz owners who want clear strategies that feel doable and aligned.

  • Custom AI Assistant Development to help teams and solopreneurs work smarter, save time, and create content with confidence.

I’m also showing up more honestly on socials, in blogs, and behind the scenes. I want you to see the real stuff, not just the polished results.

Final Thoughts

Scaling back wasn’t a failure. It was a return. A return to freedom, focus, and feeling good in my business again.

If you’re navigating a season of burnout, transition, or “WTF do I even want this business to be?”…just know you’re not alone. Sometimes the best thing you can do is pause, reset, and give yourself permission to build differently.
