How to Use Customer Testimonials & Reviews to Build Trust Online

By Kaycee McCoy, the human behind Create/Captivate (and lover of honest feedback that isn’t a Yelp meltdown)

You can have the best products, the most stunning website, and a social feed curated to perfection…

But if your potential customers don’t trust you, none of that matters. And in a world full of scams, spam, and one too many “too-good-to-be-true” offers, trust is the real currency.

So how do you earn it? Enter: customer testimonials and reviews.

These little nuggets of social proof do more than stroke your ego (though, let’s be real, it is nice to read that someone loved your service or products). They build credibility, boost conversions, and humanize your brand in a way that no sales page ever could.

Let’s break down why testimonials matter and how to actually use them to your advantage.

Testimonials Are Your Digital Word-of-Mouth

Word-of-mouth has always been the gold standard of marketing. But online? It’s all about what people say in reviews, Google ratings, and those juicy testimonial quotes. People trust other people, especially strangers who took time out of their day to rave (or rant).

According to BrightLocal, 98% of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase decision. That’s nearly everyone. Including your dream clients.

So, if you’re not showcasing those happy customer stories yet? Let’s fix that.

Where to Collect Testimonials That Pack a Punch

Before you can share those glowing reviews, you gotta gather them. Don’t be shy! Just ask! Most happy clients or customers are more than willing to say something nice when prompted.

Here’s where I’ve had the best luck collecting them:

  • Google Business Profile – Goldmine for local SEO and trust

  • Facebook – Super accessible for your current audience

  • Email follow-ups – Ask post-purchase or post-service (make it extra easy by automating this process by setting up a customer journey)

  • DMs & texts – Got a sweet compliment in your inbox? Ask if you can share it!

  • Surveys or feedback forms – Add an optional testimonial section

💡Pro Tip: Make it easy. Share a direct link to where you want them to leave the review. Bonus points if you give a few prompts like: “What made you choose us?” or “What was your favorite part of the experience?”

How to Ask Without Being Awkward

Let’s keep it real. Asking for reviews can feel a little ick sometimes. But it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s a script you can tweak:

“Hey [Customer Name]! It was such a joy working with you. If you have a minute, would you mind sharing a quick testimonial about your experience? It really helps other customers find us, and your words go a long way.”

Add a link. Say thank you. Maybe throw in a virtual hug. Done.

Where to Use Testimonials for Maximum Impact

Now for the fun part—putting those love notes to work.

Here’s where I recommend showcasing your testimonials to build trust and boost conversion:

  • Homepage: Highlight 1–3 standout quotes above the fold or near your CTA

  • Service Pages: Drop a relevant testimonial that speaks directly to that offer

  • Product Pages: Let those 5-star reviews sell it for you

  • Social Media: Make it visual with screenshots, stylized quotes, or even video clips

  • Email Marketing: Include short testimonials in newsletters or campaign launches

  • Presentations & Pitches: Add a few customer success stories to seal the deal

At Pawsnickety Pets (my other business), I love pulling quotes from social media comments or Voxer messages (with permission!) and turning them into branded graphics for Instagram.

Types of Testimonials That Convert

Not all testimonials are created equal. The best ones:

✅ Address the customer’s initial concern or hesitation
✅ Show the transformation or value they received
✅ Include specific, relatable language
✅ Feel authentic and personal (not stiff or scripted)

Here’s a glow-up example:

❌ “Kaycee is great. Would recommend.”
✅ “Before working with Kaycee, I had no clue how to build a content strategy that didn’t feel exhausting. Now, I have a weekly plan I actually use, and I’m seeing consistent engagement on Instagram. Total game-changer!”

Video Testimonials = Trust Multiplier

If someone is willing to get on camera and sing your praises? That’s next-level trust-building.

You don’t need a fancy production crew. A selfie video with decent lighting and clear audio does the trick. Ask them to speak naturally, and keep it under 90 seconds.

Video = visual, emotional, and incredibly convincing.

Let Reviews Feed Your Content Machine

Testimonials can pull double duty in your marketing strategy. Repurpose them into:

  • Carousel graphics

  • Story highlights

  • Pinterest pins

  • Email headers

  • Case studies

  • Reels with customer quotes + behind-the-scenes clips

Don’t just post it once and call it a day. Schedule those testimonials to pop up quarterly or build a “Client Success Stories” content series.

Wrapping It Up

In 2025, building trust online isn’t optional it’s literally everything. And your best marketing asset might just be sitting in your inbox, waiting to be turned into magic.

Ask for those reviews. Showcase them boldly. Let your people be your proof.

Because when customers see others like them raving about your work? That’s when the real connection (and conversion) happens.
