How to Build a Community, Not Just a Following, on Social Media
By Kaycee J. McCoy, Owner of Create/Captivate & Builder of Human-First Brands
Let’s be honest: anyone can get followers these days. You can post cute dog videos, jump on a trending sound, or pay for some quick boosts and boom…your numbers go up. But here’s the tea: a big follower count means nothing if those people don’t care about you or what you do.
What really moves the needle? Community!
When you’ve got a social media community (not just a crowd) you’ve got people who show up for you. They engage, share, cheer you on, and convert into actual paying customers. They’re in it with you. And that, my friend, is marketing gold.
So how do you go from “I have followers” to “I have a community”? Here’s what’s working for me and the clients I support… plus some real-life examples to inspire you.
Show Up Like a Human
This one seems obvious, but I promise it’s often overlooked. People don’t connect with perfection, they connect with personality.
Let them see your face. Let them hear your voice. Share your wins and your learning moments. Use real language. Show your behind-the-scenes. Be honest. Be warm. Be you.
💡 I’ve noticed a direct boost in engagement any time I post from the heart—whether it’s a launch that flopped or something I’m deeply proud of. People want to see your journey, not just your highlight reel.
Talk With People, Not At Them
Social media shouldn’t feel like you’re shouting into a void. If you’re only ever pushing out content and never taking time to comment, reply, or engage with your audience, you’re not building a community, you’re broadcasting.
Try this instead:
-
End your captions with a question or invitation
-
Use polls or quizzes in stories to start conversations
-
Respond to every comment and DM (within reason)
-
Jump into the comments of your followers’ posts too
💬 Example: I once asked my audience “What’s your biggest business win this month?” in an IG caption, and the replies rolled in like magic. People want to share, but they just need an invitation.
Be Consistently Valuable
You don’t have to post every day, but you do need to offer value consistently. That value can look like:
-
Helpful tips or how-to’s
-
Thoughtful insights from your experience
-
Encouragement or motivation
-
Behind-the-scenes content
-
Answers to FAQs
-
Lighthearted, relatable fun
💡 Pro Tip: I keep a “content bank” in my Notes app where I jot down story ideas, client questions, or things I said during consults. You never know what might turn into your next viral post or DM convo starter.
Celebrate the People in Your Community
One of the best ways to turn a follower into a community member is to shine the spotlight on them.
-
Repost their content and tag them
-
Celebrate customer wins or testimonials publicly
-
Host community challenges or features
-
Shout out people who comment regularly
đź’ˇ In C/C “Show and Tell” brand showcases of the past, I’ve highlighted client work and bragged on their growth. People love seeing that kind of mutual support and it creates a ripple effect of connection.
Create Recurring Content People Look Forward To
Give your audience something to come back for. This could be:
-
A weekly Q&A
-
A monthly themed series (like “Workshop Wednesdays”)
-
A behind-the-scenes feature every Friday
-
A signature style of Reel, TikTok, or carousel that’s super you
💡 At my store Pawsnickety Pets, we’ve leaned into “Behind the Brand” and “Welcome Home Wednesday” formats that keep people engaged and anticipating more. The routine helps build familiarity. Familiarity builds trust.
Invite People Off the Platform
A true community isn’t limited to one app. Invite your people to deeper spaces where connection can grow:
-
Email newsletter (offer a juicy freebie!)
-
Private Facebook group or Slack channel
-
Local meetups, pop-ups, or workshops
-
In-person events if your audience is local (hello, Hampton Roads & Richmond!)
💡 When people see each other engaging beyond the scroll, it deepens the “I belong here” feeling. That’s what makes a group of followers feel like a real community.
Stay Aligned With Your Values
When you’re clear about who you are and what you stand for, you attract the right people…and as a big ‘ole bonus they’ll stick around!
Whether you’re passionate about sustainability, small business collaboration, inclusivity, or mental health, make it part of your content. Let your people see that there’s a heartbeat behind the brand.
đź’ˇ One of my most-shared posts EVER was a raw, vulnerable video about downsizing C/C and changing my business model from a boutique studio to a one-woman show. That message spoke to my people and my community grew.
Wrapping It Up
Building a community on social media takes more than curated feeds and clever captions. It takes heart. It takes time. And it takes a willingness to be seen.
But when you shift your mindset from “gaining followers” to “building relationships,” everything changes. People feel that. And they’ll start showing up for you the way you show up for them.
