Staying Authentic & Ethical While Using AI for Content Creation
By Kaycee J. McCoy, Owner of Create/Captivate & Proudly Human-Centered Marketer
Let’s be honest…
AI is everywhere in 2025. It writes blogs. It creates graphics. It even talks back in customer service chats. It’s fast, it’s efficient, and for us business owners juggling way too many hats? It can be a total lifesaver.
But here’s the thing… in a world where robots can write your Instagram captions and design your next sales flyer in seconds, how do you make sure your voice still shines through?
I’ve spent years building a brand (and helping clients do the same) that’s rooted in connection, storytelling, and genuine human energy. So I’m all for using tech tools, but I’m even more about doing it in a way that’s true to you and responsible to your audience.
Here’s how I’m keeping things authentic and ethical while using AI in my content creation process (for my 2 businesses) and how you can too.
Know What AI is Great For And What It’s Not
AI can generate ideas, structure outlines, and help you start. But it can’t replicate lived experience, emotional nuance, or the heart behind your message.
Use AI to:
-
Brainstorm content prompts
-
Write first-draft copy to be heavily customized
-
Organize ideas into structured outlines
-
Speed up repetitive tasks like rewriting FAQs
But leave the storytelling, personal examples, and final polish to YOU.
💡 I always say: AI can help you write, but it shouldn’t speak for you.
Inject Your Voice (On Purpose)
Here’s a little secret: people can tell when content is AI-generated. It sounds too polished, too vague, or worse…like it could’ve been written by anyone.
You’ve got to filter everything through your brand voice. That means:
-
Adding in your phrases, personality, and quirks
-
Including real examples from your business experience
-
Using emotional language that resonates with your audience
-
Removing generic filler words and replacing them with specificity
💡 I like to run AI-generated drafts through my “Kaycee-o-meter.” If I wouldn’t say it in a client meeting or on a coffee date, it gets edited.
Fact-Check, Always
AI isn’t infallible. It pulls from what’s already online, which means it can be outdated, biased, or just plain wrong.
Before you publish anything written with AI’s help:
-
Verify stats or quotes
-
Double-check event dates or location-based references
-
Make sure you’re not accidentally copying existing work
💡 Make sure what you’re sharing is still relevant and not just a regurgitated Google answer from 2019.
Credit Creators (Yes, Even AI-Adjacent Ones)
If AI pulls visual content or templates from another creator’s style or database, give credit where credit’s due.
Also, please don’t take someone’s voice, structure, or ideas just because AI reworded it for you. There’s still an ethical line between “inspired by” and “straight up copied.”
💡 Respect for creatives is non-negotiable in my book. Even when tech is in the mix, humans deserve the credit they’re due.
Use AI to Enhance, Not Replace, Your Creativity
When used well, AI is like a creative sidekick. AI can help bring your vision to life faster. But don’t let it box you in or dull your voice. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s connection. Perfection is the enemy of connection.
Try this:
-
Use AI to build out content calendars, then add your own unique flair
-
Let it help with caption hooks or blog intros, then rewrite in your tone
-
Have it reformat your content across platforms (like turning blogs into emails or reels)
💡 I use AI as a springboard when I’m feeling tapped out or low-energy, but I always wrap things with a final pass through my own heart + brain.
Be Transparent With Your Audience
You don’t have to write a full disclaimer under every post, but it is okay to let your audience know you’re using AI thoughtfully. It builds trust.
Try phrases like:
-
“I used an AI tool to help structure this, but the ideas and voice are all me.”
-
“This post was AI-assisted, but Kaycee-polished.”
-
“AI helped me organize my thoughts… now here’s the real stuff I want to say…”
💡 If authenticity is your brand value (and I know it is), being open about your tools just adds to your credibility.
Wrapping It Up
AI is here to stay. But here’s the beautiful part: so are you.
Your lived experiences. Your stories. Your humor. Your point of view. These are the things that can’t be replicated by machines or really cool robots that make our entrepreneurial lives better. They’re exactly what your audience needs most right now.
So use the tools. Automate the busy work. But keep the soul of your content rooted in you. Because that’s where the real magic lives.
