5 Top Small Business Marketing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

By Kaycee J. McCoy, Creative Strategist, Marketing Coach & Recovering DIY Marketer

Look, marketing your small business isn’t easy. I get it! You’re wearing 15 gazillion hats, your to-do list is a mile long (and growing), and some days you’re just trying to remember to eat lunch before 4pm.

But here’s the thing…

Marketing doesn’t have to feel like a dumpster fire. If you can dodge a few common mistakes (ones I’ve absolutely made myself), you’ll save time, money, and a whole lotta frustration.

Let’s break down the top marketing oopsies I see and how to fix them like the pro that I know you are.

Mistake #1: Having No Clear Strategy

You wouldn’t build a house without a blueprint, right? So why market your business without a marketing strategy?

Posting randomly on social, running ads without direction, or copying what someone else is doing won’t cut it. Without a clear strategy, you’re just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks.

Fix It:
Create a simple marketing roadmap that aligns with your business goals. Start by asking:

  • Who are you trying to reach?

  • What do they care about?

  • What action do you want them to take?

Not sure where to start? That’s why I created my Social Media Strategy Workbook! Winging it is not a marketing plan, friend.

Mistake #2: Ignoring Your Brand Identity

Branding is not just a logo. It’s how your business looks, feels, and sounds across every touchpoint. If your colors, fonts, tone, or vibe are all over the place, it creates confusion. Confused people don’t buy.

Fix It:
Get crystal clear on your brand voice and visuals. Lock in:

  • Your brand colors and fonts

  • Your tone (fun and friendly? professional and polished?)

  • The feeling you want people to have when they interact with you

Then stick with it. Consistency builds trust, and trust builds loyal customers.

💡Pro tip: A brand refresh doesn’t mean a total overhaul. Sometimes, it’s just cleaning up your Canva templates and writing bios that actually sound like you.

Mistake #3: Trying to Be Everywhere at Once

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, LinkedIn, email, blogging, podcasting… YIKES! If you’re trying to do all the things, chances are you’re burning out and not seeing results anywhere.

Fix It:
Focus on 1–2 platforms where your audience actually hangs out. Do them well, and stay consistent. You can always add more later once you’ve built a rhythm.

Mistake #4: Skipping Email Marketing

I know, social media gets all the hype, but email is still where the conversions happen. If you’re not building an email list, you’re missing out on a direct line to your most engaged people.

Fix It:
Start simple. If you’re B2B create a freebie (like a checklist or guide) and use it to grow your list. If you’re B2C create a predictable cadence (1x month) for your monthly newsletters. Either way, send valuable content regularly, not just promos.

  • Share tips

  • Recap blog posts

  • Announce events or product drops

  • Tell behind-the-scenes stories

Mistake #5: Not Tracking What’s Working

I can’t tell you how many business owners are running on vibes instead of data. “I think that post did okay” or “People seem to like this product” isn’t enough.

Fix It:
Take time each month to look at your analytics. What content is performing best? Where’s your website traffic coming from? What are people clicking on in your emails?

Use tools like:

When you know what’s working, you can do more of that and stop wasting time on stuff that’s not moving the needle in your business.

Final Thoughts
